A Relaxing Activity To Soothe Your Sunday
A creative mindful exercise for your weekend
Happy Sunday, Creative Friend -
I hope your weekend has been everything you’ve needed it to be.
But just in case you’re craving some peace… I have a calm and easy activity to offer you.
I like to do this when I want to get into my journal but don’t know where to start. It’s a wonderful transition exercise that moves you into a creative headspace. Just DO and enjoy—that’s when the door to creativity unlocks. I bet you’ll notice new inspiration and curiosities come to you as you get lost in this simple exercise.
Can you guess where I’m going with this?
Hash marks, small swipes - whatever you want to call them, are their own kind of magic. Repetition allows us to get lost in rhythm. We cannot mess this up, so the pressure is off.
Delightfully, you can do them with infinite materials and tools:
Watercolor and a flat brush? Sure!
Watercolor and a tiny round brush? Yep.
Acrylic paint and a Filbert brush? Indeed.
Marker brush pen? Absolutely.
Chunky charcoal pencil? Mmmm. Definitely.
Palette knife and paint? Oh, heck yes! (and on and on).
Your art supply stash is your oyster.
Given its semi-unpredictable nature, watercolor can encourage curiosity and play. It runs, it bleeds…., and if allowed to, it begins to take on a life of its own.
Today, I invite you to fill a page with small, methodical, watercolor brush marks.
Don’t think about anything. Keep each mark separate or allow marks to touch their neighbors and watch how they interact.
What do you enjoy more?
Don’t worry about if you’re doing it “correctly.” There is no correct way.
The way YOU do it during this exercise is the exact right way. You’re the boss here.
Try Adding Some Music
I love adding music to this activity, choosing based on my emotional and energy needs, and sometimes switching as I work.
I urge you to pay attention to how you feel and how your art changes as your music changes. Try a few different playlists and see what happens!
Peace? Maybe I’d go with something like this.
Energy? Maybe this.
Deep focus? I’m a fan of this.
Am I craving a spa day? This is lovely.
I’m ready to wind down with a glass of wine at the end of the day? This.
When you’re finished, look back on what you made.
What do you love about it?
What would you want to try again?
Do you like having music in the background, or prefer silence?
Make notes for yourself in your journal or on a separate piece of paper you can clip or tape to the page so you can refer back to your observations later. It’s all valuable information!
My friend, that’s it for today!
I hope this little treat brings you joy this weekend. I’d love to hear about your experience with it! Comment below to let me know.
XO -
